Five separate announcements pointed at the same shift this edition: rig-floor data is consolidating into one predictive layer instead of five competing dashboards. Baker Hughes published field-verified ROP gains from three continents, Nabors and Corva merged two analytics stacks into one, and a newly combined Devon Energy said AI — not headcount — is how it plans to find $1 billion in savings.
Five verified items from late June and early July — every date and figure checked against a primary or trade-press source. Vendor commentary is tagged as commentary, not news. Here’s what mattered on the floor.

Baker Hughes’ Kantori posts double-digit ROP gains in Middle East, Australia and Argentina trials
Baker Hughes detailed field results from its Kantori autonomous well-construction service, which pairs physics-based models with AI to guide ROP optimization and autonomous directional drilling. In a Middle East onshore campaign, the third well on a pad saw on-bottom ROP rise 24–49% across two hole sections versus prior wells on the same pad, with NPT down 100%. In Australia, an extended-reach unconventional well improved average ROP 40% and finished 2.5 days faster. In Argentina, TotalEnergies’ three-well Fenix campaign showed on-bottom ROP climbing as much as 84% from first well to third as the system “self-learned” across the campaign.
Why it matters
These are outcome numbers, not black-box claims — ROP, NPT and drilling-day counts, benchmarked well-to-well on the same pad. It’s the clearest public evidence yet that combining physics models with live well data can compound in performance across a campaign, not just on a single well.

Nabors and Corva fold predictive analytics into a single edge-to-cloud stack
Nabors Drilling Technologies and Corva AI advanced “RigCLOUD Powered by Corva,” merging Nabors’ edge-computing platform with Corva’s AI platform-as-a-service into one KPI source instead of two competing scorecards. The combined system standardizes how metrics like connection time and ROP are calculated across vendors, feeds predictive insights — e.g., anticipating downhole vibration — back to rig-floor apps in real time, and has been deployed in the field since March 2026.
Why it matters
The operational headache this solves is a familiar one — five screens, five different definitions of the same KPI. Standardizing the data layer before layering AI on top is the unglamorous but necessary step that determines whether predictive monitoring is trustworthy at the rig floor.

NOV’s NOVOS automation platform goes live on three Petrovietnam Drilling rigs
Petrovietnam Drilling (PV Drilling) began rolling out NOV’s NOVOS automation layer across three offshore rigs — PV Drilling VI, VIII and IX — as a step toward fleet-wide “Smart Rig” standardization. NOVOS sits above existing rig control systems (Amphion, Cyberbase) and coordinates drilling by scenario rather than controlling individual equipment in isolation; PV Drilling is pairing it with rig asset-management software to support predictive maintenance, with fleet-wide rollout targeted by 2030.
Why it matters
A multi-year, fleet-wide automation commitment from a national driller — not a single pilot rig — signals that standardized automation layers are becoming a procurement expectation, not an experiment.

Post-merger Devon Energy puts AI at the center of a $1B synergy target
Following the close of the Devon–Coterra merger, Devon’s leadership described AI as core to integrating the two companies and hitting $1 billion in pre-tax synergies by end-2027. VP of Drilling & Completions Matt Hinson detailed how the in-house InnDrill platform already flags anomalies — e.g., motor stall patterns — and routes alerts straight to rig personnel in real time, a marked shift from a legacy real-time monitoring center where an engineer might not see an issue until the next day.
Why it matters
This is a live before/after case study of moving from a centralized human-monitoring desk to automated, criteria-based alerting — precisely the operational gap real-time predictive monitoring is built to close.

GlobalData: real-time monitoring “now expected, not optional” across upstream
A new GlobalData Strategic Intelligence report, “Industrial Internet in Oil & Gas,” finds AI and digital twins are becoming the default layer for monitoring drilling and production, driven by capital-intensive, geographically remote projects and rising ESG scrutiny. The global Industrial Internet market is forecast to hit $552.7B by 2029 (16% CAGR from 2024), with the energy sector alone contributing an estimated $79B of that by 2029.
Why it matters
Independent analyst confirmation that the market has moved past pilot-project skepticism — real-time monitoring is now a baseline operating expectation for upstream operators, not a differentiator.

Operators/vendors publishing AI-drilling news
The Rig Floor Take
Strip away the vendor names and this edition is one story told five times. NOV standardizing rig control under NOVOS. Nabors and Corva collapsing two competing KPI systems into one. Baker Hughes stacking physics-based guardrails under AI so autonomous directional drilling stays inside a realistic envelope. A newly merged Devon Energy routing real-time alerts straight to a rig superintendent’s phone instead of a next-day report. Analysts calling real-time monitoring table stakes, not a pilot.
None of these companies are really selling faster drilling. They’re selling certainty about what’s happening downhole right now — and what’s about to go wrong before it does.
That’s the throughline we keep coming back to: the premium is moving from raw horsepower to foresight. The rigs — and the operators — that win the back half of 2026 will be the ones that see around the corner before the bit does.
