From the Rig Floor Report

A weekly read on drilling automation, the digital oilfield, and where real-time intelligence is moving the bit — sourced, verified, no vendor spin.

A WellCommand™ Weekly Brief June 8 – June 15, 2026 Catch-Up Edition · 4 stories · The Take

A note on timing: this catch-up edition closes out the June 8–15 week we owed you, and it lands the same day as No. 03. The through-line that week was infrastructure for trust — SLB stood up a certified marketplace for AI and drilling software and put a date on a digital investor day, while IADC’s drilling engineers spent their quarterly forum on the one thing standing between “automated” and “autonomous”: getting the systems to talk to each other. Different rooms, same conclusion — the value is moving to the layer that lets a trusted signal travel.

SLB launches a governed Digital Marketplace for AI agents, models and drilling software

SLB launched the SLB Digital Marketplace, a single curated channel where energy companies can discover, deploy and scale AI agents, domain models, workflow apps, data connectors and digital tools across planning, drilling, production and asset management. It opens with roughly 200 products from SLB and 30-plus partners, spanning Delfi and Lumi SaaS apps, plug-ins and Tela AI skills/agents/foundation models — with every listing certified for security, interoperability and compatibility before it goes live.

Why it matters: The bottleneck on autonomy was never the algorithms — it’s trust and integration. A marketplace that pre-certifies tools to interoperate is a bet that the value sits in the governed layer, not the individual app. That’s the same principle behind real-time well intelligence: a signal you can trust, moving cleanly across systems, beats a smarter silo every time.

Standards & Autonomy • IADC DrillBits · DEC Q2 Tech Forum

IADC’s drilling engineers put the autonomy bottleneck on the table: making the systems talk

At the IADC Drilling Engineers Committee’s Q2 Tech Forum, hosted at Noble’s Houston office, the theme was “The One Rig Approach: Driving Peak Performance Through Interoperability.” Sessions ran from “From Fleet Homogeneity to Global Interoperability” to “Managing Control Handoffs Between Rig and Cloud” to a live demonstration of the D-WIS (Drilling & Wells Interoperability Standards) framework applied to autonomous drilling — with the next, more complex demo scenario slated for later in 2026.

Why it matters: The engineers naming the gate to autonomy named interoperability, not intelligence. The algorithms exist; what’s missing is the clean, real-time signal moving across vendors and from rig to cloud without losing meaning. That handoff — not the model — is the hard part, and it’s exactly where real-time monitoring lives or dies.

SLB sets a Digital Investor Day — the digital business takes center stage

SLB scheduled a Digital Investor Day for June 17 in New York, where leadership would lay out the vision for its digital business as AI and digital technologies reshape the sector. Coming days after the marketplace launch, the timing was the tell: the company that built its name on iron and chemistry was preparing to ask the market to value it on software and AI. (The results of that day are covered in No. 03.)

Why it matters: When the largest oilfield-services company in the world stages an investor day specifically for its digital arm, it’s reframing where the margin lives. For everyone downstream — operators, contractors, smaller vendors — it raises the bar on what “digital” has to deliver: not dashboards, but decisions and outcomes that move the P&L.

Market Pulse • Baker Hughes / Rigzone · June 5–9

North America keeps adding rigs — count climbs to 732, Canada doing the heavy lifting

Baker Hughes’ North America rotary rig count rose to 732 — up 8 week on week, with the U.S. up one to 563 and Canada up seven. Of the U.S. total, 481 rigs were horizontal — the placement-dependent wells that live or die on staying in zone — against 64 directional and 13 vertical. Year on year, North America was up 59 rigs, with Canada accounting for 55 of that gain.

Why it matters: A U.S. count that barely moves while horizontals dominate the mix says the growth isn’t in more rigs — it’s in placing each lateral better. When 85% of your U.S. rigs are drilling horizontals, staying in the reservoir sweet spot stops being a nicety and becomes the whole economic case for the well.

The Rig Floor Take

Two rooms that week reached the same verdict from opposite directions. SLB built a certified marketplace — a bet that the money is in tools you can trust to interoperate, not in any one clever app. IADC’s engineers, meanwhile, spent their forum diagnosing why autonomy stalls: not the algorithms, but the messy handoff of a signal between vendors and from rig to cloud. One sold the solution; the other named the problem. Same gap.

The rig count quietly underlines why it matters now. Growth isn’t coming from more iron — it’s coming from placing each horizontal better, and 481 of 563 U.S. rigs are drilling exactly those wells. A measurement you merely collect is a cost; a measurement that flows, certified and in time, to the decision that needs it is an edge. The differentiator is no longer the smartest box — it’s whose data you can trust to move.

WellCommand™ lives in exactly that gap: predictive, real-time well intelligence that surfaces the change while it’s still cheap to fix. Outcomes, not dashboards.
